"What a lot has happened since last year . . . . How far I've come! I'm the same girl and yet not the same. I wonder if it's always like that? Folks keep growing from one person into another all their lives, and life is just a lot of everyday adventures. Well, whatever life is, I like it."
--Caddie, from Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink
I just finished Caddie Woodlawn (written in 1935), which I saved from the rain as it sat on a free table a few months back. The story is based on the author's grandmother's childhood growing up in Wisconsin in the 1860s. It just so happens Carol Ryrie Brink also wrote Baby Island (1937), one of my favorite YA/children's books, a connection that I just discovered while reading about the author on wikipedia.
