last night i dreamt of darth vader. he was a hitler metaphor that spread emptiness from town to town through mass extermination of all the music. only a few people realized what was occurring. people disappeared when they protested; they were tortured or murdered, never heard from again. darth vader worked subtly but his control of the cities was complete.
in my dream, i was in an auditorium full of people. it was a town meeting and the musicians performing on stage were being arrested when they didn’t agree to conform to darth vador’s demands. i stood up on the back of a couch, screaming, protesting the death of music (super snark was holding me up from behind to help me with my balance). my voice was lost in all the noise. the audience didn’t fully comprehend what was happening; they were going along with it all; they were compliant. one of the musicians who wouldn’t conform snuck away into the audience during the arrests...one of the few who understood that without a general presence of music in the community, a loss of awareness would extend into people’s consciousness. it would affect their abilities to think and make educated choices, to appreciate life, to love and laugh, to enjoy any of the simple joys.
so…in honor of the music that inspires me to protest in my dreams, that expresses my thoughts when I am wordless or overwhelmed with feeling, that calms me, comforts me, educates me, and gets me moving and dancing, here’s a list of top fives. (note: these of course can change at any moment…into other top 5 choices.)
