And, as I mentioned, Monday was Snark's Bday. Of course, to celebrate we went rockhounding. We had planned on camping as well, but our plans got messed up and we didn't leave until Monday, so we decided to just make it a day trip.
We drove west toward Sahuarita through Sonoita following some new roads that we had never been on. We found a miniature waterfall and some beautiful views, and eventually made it within the vicinity of our destination (following Fucking Mitchell's rockhounding directions always gets us lost, hence, our nickname for the famous rockhound author). We parked the car when it could go no farther on the dirt road, and we hiked the rest of the way in ("the rest" just meaning until we decided to start scavenging for rocks since we didn't really know if we were in the right place).
We had a great time. We wore shorts; it was sunny, but breezy. We got to hike and rockhound for about four hours. I didn't find many good rocks, but Snark found a little pocket of azurite that kept him busy for a while, as well as some peacock colored copper ore. Vdog was in heaven, exploring her surroundings without a leash and finding some poop to munch on (so gross!).
The next day we hiked in the Bisbee hills, trying to find a trail that made it all the way to Juniper Flats, which is the western most part of Bisbee that has a gathering of oddly-inspired houses on the very outskirt of town (kind of near the tunnel that leads you out of town). We never made it to Juniper Flats, but we hiked, again, for about four hours, mostly on a trail (though a few times through miserable brush that scratched at our legs when we diverged from the main trail). It was fun and I imagined I was traveling on an adventure through a world (and tale) such as Narnia or Lord of the Rings.
It was sunny, but very, very windy! We got our first sunburns of the year, which we realized much later that evening. The worst of it, for me, was behind my knees and on my calves. I couldn't bend the crease of my knees for three days without moaning.
