holy rain, batman!

it's RAINING! the usually dry canal in front of our house is flooded with a wide brown river moving quickly toward downtown. looking out across the canal toward the street, I see that the driving lane headed downtown is equally flooded. i want to scurry into rain boots and a raincoat and hurry out to stomp in the great lake puddles . . . to rejoice in the havoc. (I don't own either of those items, though, so I'm staying put, dry and comfortable.) Inside the kitchen, the lights are occasionally dimming in and out. The thunder is low and encompassing. It sounds like a rumbly belly. And look! Kiddie pools are suddenly popping up throughout our yard from the excess of water. about 20 minutes ago hail pounded to the ground, covering the wet dirt and wood chips (what's left of them, that is) with ice that looked like white styrofoam packaging beads. It's quite exciting, even if it's just a rainstorm . . . an ordinary happening.

Yesterday we were gifted with a similar monsoon afternoon. our pumpkin plant leaves, perky and stout, had a hard time holding up, however, and now they slump, more perforated than whole. (I just remembered the old man in the film Amelie who would punch holes into his wife's plants and anything else he could find. It kind of looks like that.) Also, our baby greens--lettuce leaves and arugula--were flattened, pressed slick to the dirt like they just got a hair wash. I'm sure most gardeners in fort collins can commiserate with me since the same thing happened to their plants earlier in the summer.
