This just in: the tucson music scene is LAME... utterly disappointing. Which is to say, club congress chose to headline an angsty (two-note guitar playing, monotone) singer named meiko (with lyrics reminiscent of 15 year old heart break) over the funky, sophisticated folk music of po’ girl (who typically play about 16 different instruments during a show including gutbucket bass, accordion, clarinet, and bicycle bell). Snark and I drove two hours to Tucson, stood in line to late-opening doors, only to discover that po’ girl was not the headliner, but the opening act (what?!). They only played 5 songs (with bad wiring...so that allison russell's usually beguiling stomp percussion was magnified above everything else) before meiko came on stage. The harmonica and gutbucket bass didn’t even make appearances (unless you count leaving the stage silently). We talked to J.J. (the drummer for po’ girl and newest member of the band who is really awesome to watch on stage—I’m glad she’s joined po’ girl) and learned that po’ girl had thought they were headlining too. Waah. We tried to stay for meiko’s set, but after one and a half songs we couldn’t stand it anymore and left for the two hour drive back home.

check out: po' girl music at their web site or on myspace
po' girl plays in silver city next friday with Jt and the clouds (a worthy companion band), but it's unlikely we'll be able to attend, since our money went to the tucson show... double waah.
