outside of the park, we drove on ranch road 170, still along the border of texas, stopping occasionally to discover rocks (of course) like jasper and agate, more abandoned homes in varying states of disarray, and an old trash hill with partially buried glass bottles, blue and lavender pieces of glass, an early twentieth-century boot, a rusted lunch box, intact...and cactus (which bit us both in our fingers).
